OUR JUSTICE? POETIC.

Alpha Dog Clergy by Debrah Shenefelt

He called me “radical fringe”——
I wasn’t invited to that particular
        meeting.

I cried for 20 years.

The sheep are so hungry.
        They’ll eat anything,

but I’d rather starve——
be the bull’s eye of their ha-has
than follow the flock.

“Radical fringe”——is my badge of honor.

Debrah Shenefelt feels thrilled she’s returned to writing poetry after a long hiatus. She loves the way
the universe allows people to reinvent themselves. Growing through challenges in her life inspires her
to write from the cutting edges of her experience. Debrah recently has had poetry published in Code
Blue Anthology
and has poems forthcoming in Clockwise Cat Magazine. Her favorite revenge poem is
“Still I Rise,” in which poet Maya Angelou transforms her pain into defiance. She lives with her spouse
Phil and their dog Molly Rose in the Tampa Bay area.
